Chalice & Blade
Chalice & Blade

The Chalice & Blade by Dryad Design represents the conjunction of divine male and female energies also known as the Great Rite.

The ribbon spirals down the piece to symbolize the energy generated during this rite, creating a vortex of rebirth. A common salutation in Witchcraft, the phrase "blessed Be" seals this sacred image. May this energy bless your home with the harmoniously balanced energy of active and passive, masculine and feminine, yin and yang.

Blessed Be!

Imbolc is celebrated on February 2nd and is the Wiccan Sabbat that is at the midpoint (cross quarter) day between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. It is also known as a Festival of Light (Fire), and there are many religions around the world that also celebrate at this time with their own Festival of Light. Christians know this as Candlemas and many Westerners celebrate it as Groundhog Day.

Pronounced Immolk, with the b silent, it means in the belly and refers to a time of the year when the ewes would be pregnant and Mother Nature was about to gush forth with new life.

For many Wiccans this is an important Sabbat, right up there with Samhain.

If you have a coven this is a good time to initiate new members or if you haven’t a coven this is a good time to form one. It is a time of new beginnings and rebirth. You can also dedicate yourself to the Craft if you’re working as a solitary.

Imbolc is also known as the Festival of Brigit or Bride, Brid, Brig, Bridey, Brigit, Brighid, Briggidda, Brigantia, Brigid, Brighid, Bridget. She is one that is known to us by many names.

Brigit has long been associated with the return of Spring, going back to pre-Christianity. Christianity converted this popular pagan holiday into Candlemas, retaining many of the ancient traditions and timeframe. Brigit became known as St. Brigid, a celebrated saint second only to St. Patrick in popularity.

The Chalice Well at Glastonbury, in Somerset, England, has long been associated with healing properties, and a hidden mystical origin. The water from the naturally spring fed well flows red, and another spring a short distance away flows white. Some have suggested these represent two faces of the ancient Goddess, the Maiden and the Mother, or that in the ancient days the well was considered to be the original Cauldron of Rebirth, a place of union between life and death, and that one who drank of the well would not age.

Buddha Guatama taught that Nirvana is achieved by breaking the cycle of samsara or the aimless wandering driven by ignorance and cravings. Our karma defines the form our lives take and our deeds determine our karma. Good deeds beget a pleasant rebirth and bad deeds a painful one. Buddha offers us more than that. His nirvana is beyond birth and rebirth. It is spiritual freedom brought by learning Dharma, the ultimate truth of the world.
